Four succesfull middle-aged men, bound by their love of food, are tired of their ordinary lives. They meet at a French country house to literally overeating themselves to death. Criticism against consumerism by showing an exceptionally display of gastronomic and erotically perversity.

When the film was first shown at Cannes in 1973, Catherine Deneuve, who was married to Marcello Mastroianni, stopped speaking to him for a week after attending the screening.
