FILM 'Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel' (Netherlands 1983, internationally known as 'the Dragon & Bumble the Bear')
"Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel" (literally: If you know what I mean) is a 1983 Dutch film based on the popular Dutch comics of Marten Toonder, which are treasured by whole generations. Toonder had a great influence in the Dutch language by introducing new words and expressions. The phrase "een eenvoudig doch voedzaam maal" (a simple yet nutritious meal) has become a colloquialism in Dutch. This film was the first animated feature produced in the Netherlands.
Sir Oliver is a bear of nobility (Dutch: een heer van stand), he likes to think, an eloquent, though not always coherent and not very bright gentleman with a slight stutter when he's upset. "Als je begrijpt wat ik bedoel" (If you know what I mean), is usually used at the end of nearly any speech he made.
